According to the CDC, there is one death by suicide in the United States every 12 minutes.  In hospice and home care this is especially relevant because cancer patients have nearly twice the incidence of suicide as the general population.  Working with seriously ill people can create unique challenges that may include navigating the legal system, advocating for self-determination, and understanding organizational policies and community perceptions.  This webinar will examine personal, professional, and ethical conflicts, address essential skill sets, and take an in-depth look at how to assess suicidal ideation.

Attendance certificate provided, however there are no pre-approved CEs associated with this webinar.

  • Discuss challenges that derive from growing support for “rational suicide” versus the need to follow state and national regulations
  • Four potential ethical dilemmas that may emanate from suicidal ideation and planning
  • Eight common errors when working with people with various levels of suicidal ideation
  • Applying skills/interventions from two theoretical frameworks to common situations
    • Sample policy/procedure
    • Counseling toolkit
    • Sample “no-suicide” contract
    • Additional slides/handout to use for ongoing staff and volunteer training
    • Handout with lecture notes
    • List of references, bibliography, and learning opportunities

This enlightening webinar is designed for all team members, including management and leadership.  Although time will be spent on counseling interventions, this webinar will provide intervention variations that all team members can use.
